1. Optical Board Recognition with Gemini Vision

Capturing an 8x8 block puzzle game from a mobile phone screenshot presents several computer vision challenges: dynamic themes, glowing gem effects, perspective warping, and varying piece rack scales.

Our serverless Netlify function utilizes Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Vision model. Rather than relying on rigid edge detectors that break with UI updates, Gemini Vision analyzes the full image context:

2. The Combinatorial Search Space

In Block Blast, the player receives a set of up to 3 pieces. Crucially, the player can place these pieces in any order (3! = 6 possible permutations):

For each permutation, our engine tests all valid anchor coordinates $(r, c)$ on the 8x8 grid. When a piece is placed, the solver simulates line clears (both rows and columns simultaneously). Clearing lines opens new empty cells, which may allow subsequent pieces to fit that would have caused Game Over in a different placement order!

3. Multi-Factor Evaluation Function

Not all legal placements are equal. Next Block Blast Move ranks every complete sequence using a composite heuristic score:

1. Survival Guarantee

Sequences that successfully place all 3 pieces receive top priority (+100,000 pts). If no sequence can place all 3, the engine finds the path that places 2 pieces to stay alive.

2. The 3x3 Fit Test

The giant 3x3 square is the most frequent cause of Game Over. Our engine simulates future spawns and penalizes board states where a 3x3 cannot fit (-800 pts).

3. Combo Streak Maximization

Simultaneous multi-line clears (clearing 2, 3, or 4 lines at once) receive exponential point multipliers matching official Block Blast scoring rules.

4. Hole & Fragmentation Penalty

Isolated 1x1 empty pockets surrounded by 4 walls are severely penalized because they can only be filled by rare 1x1 dots.

4. Blazing Fast Client-Side Execution

Our solver engine is implemented in high-performance JavaScript utilizing 64-element typed arrays (`Uint8Array`) and bitwise operations. It evaluates between 10,000 and 200,000 positions in under 15 milliseconds.

Furthermore, calculations run inside a background HTML5 Web Worker, guaranteeing that the user interface, animations, and touch controls remain 100% fluid at 60 FPS without ever lagging your device.
